Why Apple’s AI is a Game-Changer
One of the coolest “AI use cases” I dream about is when I meet up with friends and drive to their place. Being German, I love being punctual, and I also want to let my friends know when I’ll arrive. Imagine if I could just sit in the car and say, “Hey, tell my friend when I’ll get there.”
Here’s how the AI would handle it:
- Find my friend and their address,
- Use maps to figure out my arrival time,
- Write a text message,
- Read it to me for approval,
- Send it to my friend once I say “OK.”
Sounds awesome, right? But why isn’t this a thing yet?
The problem is that AI isn’t fully integrated with our devices. It doesn’t have all the info it needs and can’t do much in our apps. That’s where Apple is shaking things up with iOS 18. They’re integrating AI deeply into your smartphone, giving it access to all the info and letting it do stuff for you in the apps.
Elon Musk, known for his wild tweets, recently talked about wanting to ban iPhones from his companies and even put them in Faraday cages. While his reactions might seem over the top, he has a point. AI becomes way more powerful when it has full access, but this also brings up big privacy concerns.
Right now, AI is mostly used for research and simple tasks like turning on lights or setting timers. For a real breakthrough, AI needs access to more info and the ability to get things done in apps. Apple’s approach with iOS 18 is a big step in that direction, promising to make our interactions with devices easier and more convenient.
